Assupol funeral cover review: what the plans actually offer
This page is a neutral summary of what Assupol publicly states about its funeral cover plans. It isn't a recommendation, and it isn't Assupol marketing copy rewritten — where Assupol's own site didn't state a figure, we say so rather than fill in a guess. Assupol describes itself as a South African insurer operating "since 1913." It offers at least four distinct funeral plans, summarised below.
instantFuneral™
Assupol's entry-level plan. As stated on Assupol's product page:
- Cover amount: up to R30 000, from a stated minimum premium of R35 per month.
- Waiting period: "policy benefits start on the 1st of next month," meaning natural-death cover isn't immediate — but Assupol describes a "unique Instant Accidental Death benefit" that "starts immediately for all the lives on your policy" once the application succeeds.
- Underwriting: no medical exams required.
- Claims: Assupol states valid registered claims are paid within 24 hours.
- Family cover: extends to spouse, children, dependants, parents, grandparents and extended family, though Assupol's page didn't state a maximum number of people or a per-person cap distinct from the R30 000 overall figure.
- Optional add-ons mentioned include Accidental Death cover, an "Assupol On-Call" benefit with grocery assistance, Family Income cover, Premium Waivers and a Cashback option.
Assupol's page did not state a minimum or maximum entry age for this plan.
Absolute Advantage
- Cover amount: R75 000, described as the plan's cover level across its variants.
- Plan variants: Singles Plan (main life insured only); Main Life Insured and Spouse Plan; Main Life Insured and Children Plan (up to 5 dependent children under 21); and a full Family Plan (main insured, spouse, and up to 5 dependent children under 21).
- Extended family: can be added for an additional premium, "up to the age of 79."
- Waiting period: six months from the policy's acceptance date for natural death; none for accidental death. A separate instant accidental death benefit of R5 000 applies before the main policy activates.
- Other stated features: phone-based enrolment with agent assistance; an automatic paid-up benefit if the main insured is younger than 55 at the policy's start; and premiums that waive after the main insured's 65th birthday while benefits continue for life.
Assupol's page did not state a minimum entry age for this plan, beyond the age-79 cap on adding extended family members.
Excellence Family
Assupol's broadest stated plan by cover amount:
- Cover amount: up to R100 000 for the policyholder, spouse and parents; up to R75 000 for all other dependants. Minimum monthly premium stated as R70.
- Family cover: Assupol states an "unlimited number of family members can be covered," and specifically notes that children are covered "for their whole life, not just until they turn 21." Stillborn children are covered, and newborns are covered for their first three months.
- Waiting period: six months from the policy's acceptance date for natural death; none for accidental death, with the same R5 000 instant accidental death benefit before activation.
- Other stated features: no medical underwriting or medical questions; a guarantee that a policyholder's family stays insured "without them having to pay any premiums for 5 years" after the policyholder's death; and premiums that can be adjusted annually to increase the benefit.
Assupol's page did not state a minimum or maximum entry age for this plan.
Cornerstone Pensioner Plan
Assupol's plan aimed specifically at older applicants and government grant recipients:
- Entry age: from age 60, with "no maximum age limit" stated explicitly by Assupol.
- Premium: minimum R70 per month, with the option to have premiums deducted directly from a state grant.
- Waiting period: six months from the policy's start date for natural death; none for accidental death.
- Underwriting: no medical examinations, though the waiting period above still applies.
- Optional dependants: a spouse and up to eight children under 21 can be added.
- Optional add-ons: a Family Care Benefit (Assupol describes 3–5 months of income support) and a Tombstone Benefit.
- Claims: Assupol states valid claims are paid within 24 hours of receiving the required documentation.
Assupol's page did not state a specific maximum cover amount for this plan.
What we couldn't verify
- A minimum or maximum entry age for the main insured person on instantFuneral, Absolute Advantage or Excellence Family (age limits were only explicitly stated for the Cornerstone Pensioner Plan, and for adding extended family under Absolute Advantage).
- A stated maximum cover amount for the Cornerstone Pensioner Plan.
- A precise premium table across ages for any plan other than the stated minimum monthly premiums.
