Best funeral cover in South Africa: how the major providers compare

Figures below are as stated on each insurer's own website, as at August 2026. Premiums and terms change — always confirm current details with the insurer before buying. See sources at the bottom of this page.

"Best" funeral cover depends entirely on what you need it to do: how many family members you want covered, how much cover you can afford, and how quickly you want a payout. There isn't a single winner here — this page sets out what several well-known South African insurers publicly state about their funeral cover products, so you can compare features side by side before you go and get quotes. Where an insurer didn't state a figure on the pages we could access, we've said so rather than guess.

Providers we checked but handled differently

Old Mutual is a well-known South African insurer that offers funeral cover, but we could not reliably load its product pages through our research tools as at August 2026, so we have no verified figures to publish here. If you're considering Old Mutual, get the current entry age, cover amount and waiting period directly from oldmutual.co.za or a Old Mutual adviser.

Momentum does not appear to sell a standalone funeral cover product under the Momentum brand itself — its individual product range (as listed on its own site) covers medical aid, life cover, car and home insurance, investments, savings, and wills and estate planning, with no separate funeral cover line. Funeral cover in the same group is sold under the Metropolitan brand (Metropolitan and Momentum are both part of Momentum Metropolitan Life Limited), which is why Metropolitan appears in the table above instead.

What to actually compare, beyond the headline cover amount
